What is CGPA

What’s CGPA Anyway? Let’s Break It Down

Have you ever looked at your report card and seen something like “CGPA: 8.4” and wondered, “Okay, cool… but what even is that?” It is very interesting and important to know about.

CGPA, or Cumulative Grade Point Average, is just a fancy way of saying: “Here’s how you’ve been doing in school overall.” Not just in one subject, but across the board. Instead of throwing a bunch of percentages at you, CGPA just gives you one clean number. Easy, right?

Alright, no boring formulas here. This is what happens:

  1. Each subject you take gets a grade — like A, B, or C.
  2. That grade is linked to a grade point — say, A = 10, B = 8, and so on.
  3. Every subject also has something called a credit, which just means how “heavy” or important that subject is.

So you multiply the grade point by the credit, do that for every subject, and then divide the total by all the credits combined.

Boom. You’ve got your CGPA.

Here’s how it might look:

SubjectGradeGrade PointCredit
MathA104
ScienceB83
EnglishA102
HistoryC63
ArtB82

Here are some quick calculations:

  • Math = 40
  • Science = 24
  • English = 20
  • History = 18
  • Art = 16

Total score = 118
Total grades = 14
Final CGPA = 8.43

That’s your number.

Not every school or college does it the same way.

  • In India? Most use a 10-point scale.
  • In the US? Usually a 4-point scale.
  • Some random colleges? They’ve got their own thing.

So if you’re converting, double-check what system you’re dealing with.

This part trips people up all the time. Everyone wants to know their marks in percentage, not just CGPA.

If you’re in India, the usual formula is: % = Scored CGPA × 9.5

So for 8 CGPA is 76%.

Some go with 10, some have their formulas. So always ask or check the official way. Want to calculate in some other way?

CGPA = %÷ 9.5
Like, for 85% your CGPA is 8.95.

Yeah.

It’s not your entire life story, but it does count — especially if you’re:

  • Applying to universities
  • Going for scholarships
  • Trying to get internships or jobs
  • Or just want to show consistent performance

Also, let’s be honest. It saves you from having to explain every subject score one by one.

That said, don’t obsess over it. A great CGPA is nice, but colleges and employers look at other stuff too like projects, personality, experience, and yeah, how you carry yourself.

CGPA might seem like a difficult term for you. But if you understand it once, you will be able to answer anyone properly regarding this. You not only answer it but also know the complete meaning of it. You just need to understand it once, and you are all done for the whole life.
